Depart London Heathrow 1025 on Iberia, arriving Madrid 1355. Transfer to Burgos for two nights at Hotel NH Collection Palacio de Burgos. Welcome and introduction.
Morning visits in Burgos: St Mary’s Cathedral (tombs of El Cid and Doña Jimena), Church of St Agatha and museum. Afternoon excursion to Las Huelgas Monastery (site of Edward I’s marriage to Eleanor of Castile).
Depart for Soria via Quintanilla de las Vinas (Hermitage of Santa María de Lara), Santo Domingo de Silos (Benedictine monastery with beautiful gardens and Romanesque cloister) and Roman town of Clunia (impressive remains including theatre, forum and baths). Five nights at the Hotel Alfonso VIII, Soria.
Morning visits in Soria, including Numantine Museum and Santo Domingo (Romanesque doorway). Afternoon excursion to Garray for Numancian ruins (settlement besieged by Rome in the 2nd century BC), followed by San Juan de Duero.
Morning visit to picturesque medieval village of Calatañazor followed by Burgo de Osma (cathedral, Romanesque tomb of San Pedro de Osma). Afternoon: ruins of Uxama Argaela and Ucero (medieval castle and underground aqueduct). Free evening.
Morning: Tiermes Archaeological Site and Gormaz (huge castle complex where El Cid was constable). Afternoon: village of Caracena for visit to castle and Romanesque church of San Pedro.
Morning visit to the Roman villa and museum at Dehesa de Soria (beautiful floor mosaics). Afternoon: double castle of Berlanga and Hermitage of San Baudelio (Romanesque architecture).
Transfer to Madrid Airport for 1455 flight, arriving Heathrow 1620.

Participants should have a good overall level of fitness for this tour. While the majority of visits will not be physically demanding, many will involve negotiating uneven ground or pavements, steps, and occasionally dim interiors. Participants should be prepared to walk around extensive archaeological sites, and certain visits will also involve climbing small hills. Some days will include long coach journeys, particularly on day 3 (travelling between Burgos and Soria), which will be broken up with plenty of stops.
Own flight reduction: £150.
