Day
1
Flight from London Heathrow to Berlin. Transfer to Seaside Park Hotel, Leipzig, for five nights. Welcome and introduction. Evening performance at Leipzig Gewandhaus featuring Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (Youth Orchestra) under Daniele Gatti: Mahler Symphony No 10 in F sharp major (completed by Deryck Cooke).

2
Morning lecture followed by a walking tour of Leipzig including the Renaissance Altes Rathaus and Baroque Barthels Hof (exteriors). Afternoon visit to the Bach Archive Museum (the world’s pre-eminent centre of Bach scholarship) followed by some free time. Evening performance at Leipzig Gewandhaus featuring Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under Valery Gergiev, with Anna Lucia Richter (soprano), Elisabeth Kulman (mezzo) and Andreas Schager (tenor): Mahler Symphony No 4 in G major, Das Lied von der Erde.

3
Morning lecture followed by visits to the Museum of Musical Instruments and Schumann House Museum. Evening performance at Leipzig Gewandhaus featuring Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Daniel Harding with Thomas Hampson (baritone): Mahler five songs based on poems by Friedrich Rückert, Symphony No 1 in D major.

4
Morning visit to Köthen Castle (where Bach served as Kapellmeister for Prince Leopold). Free time followed by evening performance at Leipzig Gewandhaus featuring the Gewandhaus Orchestra with MDR Rundfunkchor Leipzig and soloists: Mahler Symphony No 8 in E flat major ‘Symphony of a Thousand’.

5
Morning lecture followed by a visit to Mendelssohn House Museum. Free afternoon. Evening performance at Leipzig Gewandhaus featuring Staatskapelle Dresden under Antonio Pappano: Mahler Symphony No 7 in E minor.

6
Morning performance at Leipzig Gewandhaus featuring Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir with soloists: Mahler Todtenfeier, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (song cycle) and Das klagende Lied (cantata). Continue to Berlin for flight to London Heathrow.

FITNESS / PRACTICALITIES
This tour involves several excursions to museums as well as walks between the hotel and Gewandhaus; participants should therefore feel comfortable staying on their feet for extended periods of time. A good general level of fitness is required for this tour.
