Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 1115 on British Airways, arriving Copenhagen 1415. Transfer via The Little Mermaid by Edvard Eriksen to 71 Nyhavn Hotel for four nights. Welcome and introductory lecture.

Day

2

Morning walking tour: "The Two Battles of Copenhagen – State Collapse and Golden Age" including the Gefion Fountain, followed by visit to Amalienborg Palace (fine Rococo architecture). Afternoon: Statens Museum for Kunst (Denmark’s national gallery with fine Danish Golden Age and modern collections).

Day

3

Morning: National Museum of Denmark (including serpentine Bronze Age wind instruments known as ‘lurs’, Trundholm Sun Chariot, Gold Horns of Gallehus and the enigmatic Gundestrup Cauldron). Afternoon: 17th century Rosenborg Castle (built by Christian IV – exterior only) followed by the David Collection (Hammershøi paintings and 18th century house interior with superb ceramics and Islamic collection). Evening lecture.

Day

4

Morning walking tour including merchants’ houses, Rundetårn (the Round Tower), 17th century Trinitatis Church and Copenhagen Cathedral. Afternoon: Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (world-class works collected by Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg Breweries) followed by Tivoli Gardens. Evening ballet performance at Tivoli Concert Hall: The Nutcracker.

Day

5

Thorvaldsen Museum (dedicated to Neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen), Baroque Vor Frelsers Kirke (Our Saviour’s Church) and Dragør. Depart Copenhagen 1505, arriving Heathrow 1615.
