Itinerary

Day

1

rways for Pisa, arriving 1405. Transfer to Lucca for five nights at Albergo Celide. Introductory lecture.

Day

2

Morning lecture followed by San Michele in Foro (Romanesque façade) and Giacomo Puccini Museum (birthplace of Puccini). Afternoon: 17th century Palazzo Mansi. Evening festival opera in Torre del Lago: Madama Butterfly.

Day

3

Morning: Museo Nazionale (housed in 15th century Villa Guinigi). Afternoon: free time followed by lecture. Evening festival opera in Torre del Lago: Il Trittico.

Day

4

Morning lecture followed by free time. Afternoon: Viareggio (elegant bathing resort frequented by Puccini with Belle Epoque and later architecture) and Villa Museo Puccini. Evening festival opera in Torre del Lago: Tosca.

Day

5

Morning excursion to gardens of Villa Reale di Marlia followed by Celle dei Puccini including Puccini family home museum (where Puccini spent his childhood summers). Afternoon: return to Lucca for Palazzo Pfanner, Basilica di San Frediano and Piazza dell’Anfiteatro.

Day

6

Morning: Romanesque Cathedral of San Martino (where Puccini played the organ; Tintoretto’s Last Supper) and museum, Church of San Giovanni. Depart Pisa 1510, arriving Heathrow 1635.
