Depart Heathrow 1135 on British Airways, arriving Gibraltar 1530. Transfer to Hotel Antonio, Zahara de los Atunes, for seven nights.
Morning: walk in coastal pine woods north of Barbate (migrant flycatchers, chameleons) followed by Cape Trafalgar (sea and migrant watch). Continue to Vejer de la Frontera (medieval walls, castle, church) and search for lesser kestrels, red-rumped swallows and migrating raptors.
Whole day excursion to Gibraltar: Siege Tunnels, Ape Den, St Michael’s Cave, Upper Rock Nature Reserve (views, possible raptor and stork migration).
La Janda (rice field) followed by boat excursion (weather permitting) from Tarifa, looking for common, striped and bottlenose dolphins, long-finned pilot whales, migrating swallows, black terns, Cory’s shearwaters and skuas.
Morning: Facinas and Natural Park of Los Alcornocales (cork oaks, forest walk, flora, possible roosting migrating raptors). Afternoon: Bolonia, Roman site of Baelo Claudia (extensive ruins and large fish salting pits).
Morning: Coto Doñana (extensive salt marshes and salt pans, waders and wildfowl with chance to spot cattle egret, flamingo, avocet, spoonbill, black-winged stilt and purple gallinule), visit to marshes near Pinzón. Afternoon: shores of Guadalquivir River near Sanlúcar and Trebujena.
Migration watch on shores and hills around Tarifa, with chance to see storks, glossy ibis, Montagu’s harrier, white-rumped swift, vultures and eagles.
Depart Gibraltar 1635, arriving Heathrow 1825.
