Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Gatwick 1230 on Easyjet, arriving Toulouse 1515. Transfer to Sarlat for seven nights at Plaza Madeleine Hôtel.

Day

2

Morning visit to Sarlat market, followed by bastide town of Monpazier and Cistercian abbey at Cadouin. Evening lecture: Prehistoric Art: Method and Meanings.

Day

3

Whole-day excursion to Les Eyzies: Abri Cro-Magnon, Abri Pataud, National Museum of Prehistory, caves of Font-de-Gaume (early animal paintings).

Day

4

Morning lecture: Romanesque. Cougnac caves (prehistoric paintings and stalactites), Souillac Abbey.

Day

5

Cave of Pech Merle and museum, followed by cave of Rouffignac.

Day

6

Lascaux caves (reproductions of famous prehistoric paintings), followed by Périgueux for Roman sites.

Day

7

Cénac (Romanesque church), bastide town of Domme (Knights Templars’ prison), historic river port of La Roque Gageac for a scenic boat trip in a replica traditional gabare.

Day

8

Morning in Sarlat (Renaissance architecture). Depart Toulouse 1725, arriving Gatwick 1815.
