Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 1125 on British Airways, arriving Helsinki 1620. Transfer to GLO Hotel Kluuvi Helsinki for two nights. Introductory lecture.

Day

2

Guided walking tour of Helsinki to include harbour, Market Square, Lutheran Cathedral, Senate Square, Helsinki Art Gallery. Afternoon: famous Rock Church and Sibelius Monument. Evening: optional concert in Helsinki.

Day

3

Depart for Lahti via the studio of Akseli Gallen-Kallela (exterior and gardens), and Hvitträsk (built in the National Romantic period by the architects Saarinen, Lindgren and Gesellius as a home and studio). Transfer to Lahti for four nights at the Cumulus Hotel. Evening festival opening concert at Sibelius Hall by Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dima Slobodeniouk

Day

4

Morning lecture. Whole-day excursion to Hämeenlinna (Sibelius’s birthplace) including museum and Hämeenlinna Castle. Evening concert at Sibelius Hall by Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dima Slobodeniouk.

Day

5

Morning lecture followed by sparkling wine reception and behind-the-scenes tour of Sibelius Hall. Boat trip to Vääksy Canal and back on Lake Vesijärvi (Sibelius spent several summers in this region in the 1890s). Evening concert at Sibelius Hall by Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

6

Morning: Sibelius’s house at Ainola and Järvenpää Art Museum. Evening concert at Sibelius Hall by Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dima Slobodeniouk.

Day

7

Free morning. Transfer to Helsinki for 1710 departure, arriving Heathrow 1820.
