Itinerary

Day

1

Depart St Pancras 0858 on Eurostar and TGV via Lille, arriving Avignon 1705. Transfer to Aigues-Mortes and embark Le Phénicien for six nights. Evening: welcome reception and overnight at Aigues-Mortes.

Day

2

Morning: Aigues-Mortes (Tour de Constance), cruise to Gallician. Afternoon: excursion through Camargue (wetlands, pastures, dunes, salt flats) with visit to working ranch (Camargue horses and bulls), Saint-Gilles. Overnight at Gallician.

Day

3

Morning cruise along the Petit Rhône to Arles for walking tour including St Trophime (Romanesque church with superb sculptures), Les Arènes (1st century BC amphitheatre) and Roman theatre. Evening lecture: Provençalism. Overnight at Arles.

Day

4

Morning cruise to Aramon. Afternoon: village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (Van Gogh) and Glanum (Roman ruins). Overnight at Aramon.

5

Morning cruise to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon: walking tour including Tour Philippe-le-Bel and Fort Saint-André (exteriors only), Musée Pierre-de-Luxembourg (16th and 17th century Provençal painting) and Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction. Afternoon: excursion to Pont du Gard (great Roman monument with museum). Evening lecture: The Medieval Papacy. Overnight at Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.

6

Morning cruise to Avignon for 14th century Palais des Papes and Musée du Petit Palais (outstanding art collection). Overnight at Avignon.

Day

7

Disembark Le Phénicien. Depart Avignon 1004 on TGV and Eurostar via Lille, arriving St Pancras 1602.
