Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Gatwick 1400, arriving Naples 1735. Transfer to Hotel Dei Cavalieri, Caserta, for six nights. Introductory talk.

Day

2

Morning: depart by coach for Casertavecchia (picturesque hill top village) to visit the 12th century cathedral of St Michael. Afternoon: visit the royal palace in Caserta (designed for the Bourbon kings of Naples by Luigi Vanvitelli). Evening lecture.

Day

3

Depart for ancient Capua, including the Museo Campano. Continue to Sant’Angelo in Formis (11th century abbey church with original frescoes).

Day

4

Depart for excursion to Baiae (ruins of ancient coastal resort, now partly submerged), including the Museo Archeologico dei Campi Flegrei. Continue to ancient city of Cumae (the Sybil’s cave).

Day

5

Morning in Aversa (extensive historical centre including cathedral dedicated to St Paul). Afternoon visit to Santa Maria Capua Vetere (cathedral, amphitheatre, museum and mithraeum).

Day

6

Whole day excursion to Pozzuoli including the Solfatara (remarkable dormant volcano), Flavian amphitheatre and Rione Terra (ancient acropolis with 17th century cathedral).

Depart Naples 1105, arriving Gatwick 1255.
