Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 1055 on British Airways, arriving Berlin 1345. Transfer to Erfurt for four nights at Victor’s Residenz Hotel. Evening: introductory lecture.

Day

2

Morning: walking tour of Erfurt including St Michael’s church, Merchants’ Church and visit to St Augustine’s Monastery (founded in the 13th century). Afternoon: tour of Georgenburse (Renaissance accommodation used by Luther and now a museum) followed by Erfurt Cathedral (where Luther was ordained in 1507) and Collegium Maius (the main building of the Old University).

3

Whole-day excursion to Weimar where Luther repeatedly visited and preached. Walking tour of Weimar followed by Herder Church (Luther shrine), City Palace and Museum (including the Cranach Gallery).

Day

4

Whole-day excursion to Eisenach. Morning: Wartburg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site where Luther found sanctuary after his heresy hearings at the Diet of Worms in 1521. Special exhibition: Luther and the Germans. Afternoon: St George’s Church and Luther’s House (where he lived during his parish schooling).

5

Transfer to Wittenberg via Eisleben: walking tour including the houses of Luther’s birth and death, St Andreas Church and St Anne’s Church. Continue to Wittenberg for two nights at Hotel Stadtpalais.

6

Walking tour and visits in Wittenberg, including Stadtkirche (known as the ‘Mother Church of the Reformation’, magnificent alterpiece by Cranach) and Schlosskirche (where Luther posted his 95 Theses), Lutherhaus Museum, special national exhibition in the Augusteum: Luther! 95 People – 95 Treasures, Panorama ‘Luther 1517’.

7

Transfer to Berlin for visit to the special exhibition in the Deutsches Historisches Museum: The Luther Effect: Protestantism – 500 Years in the World. Depart Berlin 1645, arriving Heathrow 1745.
