Itinerary

Day

1

Tour assembles 1230 at the Three Counties Hotel, Hereford, for four nights. Afternoon excursion to The Firs, Lower Broadheath (Elgar’s birthplace). Evening concert at Hereford Cathedral: Bruckner Te Deum, Mendelssohn Lobgesang.

Day

2

Morning lecture followed by visit to Mappa Mundi exhibition and some free time in Hereford. Afternoon concert at Hereford Cathedral: National Youth Orchestra of Wales conducted by Carlo Rizzi, playing works by Borodin, Bernstein and Mahler (please note these pieces are subject to confirmation by the festival office). Evening concert at Hereford Cathedral: Parry Blest pair of Sirens, Symphony No 5 and Invocation to Music.

3

Morning lecture followed by excursion to Ludlow. Afternoon concert at Hereford Cathedral: Binchois Consort conducted by Andrew Kirkman, performing chant and polyphony in honour of St Ethelbert and the Blessed Virgin Mary, alongside music for Thomas of Hereford. Evening concert at Hereford Cathedral: Ravel Le tombeau de Couperin, Boulanger Psalm 130, Walton Viola Concerto, Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms.

4

Morning lecture followed by free time. Afternoon concert at Leominster Priory: Gothic Voices present Mary through the eyes of Hildegard von Bingen and pieces by Joanne Metcalf, Andrew Smith, John Dunstaple, Richard Smert and Leonel Power. Evening concert at Hereford Cathedral: Vaughan Williams Toward the Unknown Region, Parry Elegy for Brahms, Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem.
