Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 0915 on Iberia, arriving Madrid 1240. Transfer to Toledo (UNESCO World Heritage site), via the location from which El Greco painted his View of Toledo, for two nights at Hotel Alfonso VI. Introduction and evening lecture: El Greco: A Candiote in Spain.

Day

2

Walking tour followed by Santo Tomé (El Greco Burial of the Count of Orgaz); Toledo Cathedral (El Greco The Miracle of St Ildefonso); and the El Greco House and Museum. Afternoon: Hospital of Santa Cruz, Convent of Santo Domingo El Antiguo, (El Greco’s first altarpieces in Toledo). Free evening.

3

Morning: Tavera Hospital (El Greco’s wooden tabernacle in the chapel, Christ Resurrected, Saint Francis of Assisi and The Tears of Saint Peter). Afternoon: transfer to Madrid via Illescas (Hospital de la Caridad holds several El Greco works), for five nights at Mercure Madrid Centro.

4

Morning lecture: Spanish Painting of the Golden Age followed by visit to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum (Spanish paintings from El Greco to Murillo). Afternoon: first visit to the Museo del Prado (masterpieces by Diego Velázquez, Zurbarán, Murillo and their contemporaries). Free evening.

5

Morning lecture: Joaquín Sorolla: Spain’s Greatest Impressionist. Ermita de San Antonio de la Florida (Goya’s frescoes of The Miracle of St Anthony) followed by Museo Sorolla (the artist’s beautiful house, garden and studio, housing portraits, landscapes and beach scenes). Afternoon: second visit to the Museo del Prado to examine later Spanish paintings.

6

Morning visit to Lázaro Galdiano Museum (further Spanish Masters). Afternoon: excursion to El Escorial (16th century palace-monastery built by King Philip II with works by Velázquez and El Greco).

7

Morning: Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (rich conspectus of Spanish paintings by El Greco, Goya and Sorolla) and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Picasso’s Guernica).

Depart Madrid 1330, arriving Heathrow 1455.
