Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Gatwick 1425 on British Airways flight BA2782, arriving Oporto 1650. Walking tour of Oporto with local guide (old town, cathedral). Embark Spirit of Chartwell for seven nights. Welcome drinks reception. Overnight Oporto.

Day

2

Cruise up river through the Douro Valley to Entre-os-Rios for lunch at the 14th century Alpendurada Monastery. Continue to Régua for the Douro Museum and overnight stay. Evening lecture followed by traditional Portuguese Fado and folk music.

3

Morning excursion to Vila Real and tour of Mateus Palace (beautiful gardens, chapel and winery). Continue to riverside town of Pinhão for evening lecture followed by dinner in local restaurant. Overnight Pinhão.

Day

4

Sail past rolling hills and terraced vineyards to Barca d’Alva (on the Spanish border) for two nights. Afternoon excursion to the medieval town of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (including castle and small churches). Evening lecture and Captain’s dinner on board.

5

Whole-day excursion to Salamanca (UNESCO World Heritage site): Plaza Mayor, Casa de las Conchas (Gothic building dating from 1493), Salamanca University (including 16th century Patio de las Escuelas), New Cathedral (16th-18th century). Evening: Portuguese barbeque on board.

6

Early morning cruise to Régua for afternoon excursion to Lamego (pilgrimage town): museum and Sanctuário Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (sanctuary with Baroque staircase). Evening lecture followed by vintage port wine celebration on board. Overnight Régua.

Day

7

Early morning cruise down river to Oporto (UNESCO World Heritage site): visit to the historic Factory House of the British Association and special tour and tasting at Graham’s Port Lodge (Symington family estate). Overnight Oporto.

Day

8

Disembark Spirit of Chartwell. Depart Oporto 1735 on British Airways flight BA2783, arriving Gatwick 1950.
