Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 0755 on British Airways, arriving Athens 1335. Transfer to Hotel Herodion, Athens, for seven nights.

Day

2

Morning: Arch of Hadrian, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Roman Agora (with Tower of Winds), Library of Hadrian and Ancient Agora (including Temple of Hephaestus and Stoa of Attalos). Afternoon: optional visit to Kerameikos cemetery. Evening talk: Athenian Religion.

3

Morning: by coach to Eleusis (site of the Eleusinian Mysteries). Afternoon: National Archaeological Museum. Evening talk: The Byzantine Church.

Day

4

Christmas Eve Morning: Theatre of Dionysus and Acropolis. Afternoon: Acropolis Museum. Christmas Eve dinner followed by optional midnight liturgy at an Orthodox church.

Day

5

Christmas Day Morning: optional service at an Orthodox church followed by walking tour of Byzantine and Orthodox churches of Athens and other monuments situated in the old heart of Athens, known as the Pláka. Visits to Syntagma Square and Olympic Stadium followed by Byzantine churches of Agia Aikaterini and Agios Nikolaos Rangavas. Celebratory Christmas lunch followed by free afternoon.

6

Excursion along the coastal route to sites of Sounion and Thorikos. Boxing Day lunch on the coast followed by evening talk: Greek Theatre.

7

Visits to sites and museums at Marathon and Brauron.

Day

8

Morning: visit to Kaisariani Monastery (Eastern Orthodox monastery with 11th century church) followed by Benaki Museum. Depart Athens 1425, arriving Heathrow 1630.
