Depart London Heathrow 0800 on British Airways, arriving Bologna 1110. Transfer to Art Hotel Commercianti for six nights. Orientation walking tour followed by evening lecture: Medieval Devotion and the Origin of the Renaissance.
Morning: Pinacoteca Nazionale (Bolognese paintings). Afternoon: Palazzo Poggi, Oratory of Santa Cecilia (fresco cycle by Costa, Francia and Aspertini) and San Giacomo Maggiore (Renaissance portico).
Morning: Cathedral, Archiginnasio (Anatomical Theatre) and Oratory of Santa Maria della Vita. Afternoon: San Petronio and San Domenico. Evening lecture: Humanism and Courtly Culture followed by free evening.
Whole day excursion to Mantua: Palazzo Te (Giulio Romano frescoes), Basilica di Sant’Andrea, Palazzo Ducale (Mantegna and Pisanello) and Camera Picta.
Whole day excursion to Parma: Cathedral and Baptistery, Palazzo della Pilotta (former palace of Farnese dynasty), Camera di San Paolo, San Giovanni Evangelista (Correggio’s Vision of St John frescoes). Evening lecture: Art, Theatre & Propaganda.
Whole day excursion to Ferrara: Castello Estense or Palazzo Schifanoia (subject to restoration works), Romanesque cathedral (and museum) and Palazzo dei Diamanti (Mantegna, Ferrarese school).
Depart Bologna 1205, arriving Heathrow 1325.

A good overall level of fitness is required for this tour. The itinerary does not involve significant amounts of walking, but in Ferrara, the walk to the Castello Estense is more demanding as it involves a great many steps. Please note that some of our visits will involve standing for periods of time.
