Itinerary

Day

1

Tour assembles at 1600 at the Angel Hotel, Bury St Edmunds for four nights. Orientation tour followed by an introductory lecture: Seeing East Anglia Through Modern Eyes.

Day

2

Morning lecture: Medieval and Modern in North Essex, followed by external tour of village housing at Rushbrooke and Thaxted Church. Afternoon: Saffron Walden’s Fry Art Gallery (featuring artwork and designs by 20th century artists with local connections such as Eric Ravilious) and Silver End (1920s/30s garden village built by Francis Crittall for the metal window factory workers).

3

Morning lecture: Modern Houses in Suffolk. Excursion to Rendham (private houses by John Penn) and Aldeburgh: private house and the Red House (home to Britten), followed by Thorpeness.

Day

4

Morning lecture: Interpretations of Vernacular, followed by a selection of villages in Loddon District including Tayler and Green village housing. Afternoon in Norwich: Cathedral Refectory (combining medieval and modern architecture), Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (Norman Foster) and UEA campus (Denys Lasdun).

Day

5

Morning lecture: Stephen Dykes Bower and 20th Century Gothic, followed by St Edmundsbury Cathedral and Theatre Royal. Tour disperses 1300 at the hotel.
