Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Gatwick 0825 on British Airways, arriving Algiers 1125. Transfer to hotel for overnight stay. Afternoon: Cathedral of Notre Dame d’Afrique, short orientation walk in central Algiers. Introductory talk.

Day

2

Morning in Algiers: exploration of the Casbah and one or more of the Ottoman palaces within it. Afternoon ight to Annaba for two nights’ stay.

Day

3

Morning: colonial era Basilica of St Augustine and site of Hippo Regius (forum, theatre, ancient basilica of St Augustine, market, museum). Afternoon: Annaba and Cap de Garde.

Day

4

Guelma (museum in reconstructed Roman theatre) followed by Khemissa (well-preserved theatre, forum, temples, Byzantine fortress). Overnight stay in Constantine.

Day

5

Morning: hillside ruins of Tiddis (home of Quintus Lollius Urbicus, builder of the Antonine Wall in Scotland). Afternoon: walking tour of the city of Constantine. Transfer to Sétif for two nights’ stay.

Day

6

Via the Medracen (grandiose pre-Roman tumulus-burial) to Lambaesis (civil town and museum). Afternoon: Timgad (Roman and Byzantine ruins, museum). Two nights’ stay in Batna.

Day

7

Drive southwards, crossing the Aurès Mountains through the Gorge of Tighanimine (Roman road-building inscription), visiting Ghou (abandoned village in the canyon of the Oued el-Abiod). Continue south of Biskra to the Roman frontier fort of Gemellae. Return to Batna via the Gorge of El Kantara (Roman bridge).

8

Depart Batna for return visit to Lambaesis (2nd century legionary base, amphitheatre), then transfer to Constantine for afternoon ight to Ghardaïa. Two nights’ stay in Ghardaïa.

Whole day exploration of Ghardaïa and neighbouring towns including mosque of Sidi Brahim at el-Atteuf (inspiration for Le Corbusier’s Notre Dame de Ronchamp).

Day

11

Morning flight from Ghardaia to Algiers. Drive to beautiful World Heritage site of Tipasa. Transfer to Algiers for two nights’ stay.

Day

12

Morning visit to National Museum of Antiquities and Islamic Art. Continue by coach to Mauritanian Royal Tomb and Cherchell (Roman port, museums with wonderful mosaics and sculpture).

Depart Algiers 1220, arriving Gatwick 1510.
