ACE and Fauna & Flora International

Here at ACE Cultural Tours, we are owned by a parent charity (The ACE Foundation) with a commitment to promoting cultural understanding through education, and the entire surplus from our tours goes to support different projects in the UK and around the world.

For many years, ACE (The Association for Cultural Exchange) has been involved with Fauna & Flora International (FFI), whose focus on securing sustainable conservation through local education reflects our own values and mission. The ACE Foundation has supported FFI projects as far afield as Cambodia, South Africa, and Romania since 1997, and we are now delighted to be extending our partnership with FFI on a brand new series of tours.

Join us in Cambridge later this year, on a short tour to celebrate our partnership and tie in with FFI’s Annual General Meeting in September. ACE Tour Director Roland Randall will lead our exploration of the city’s fascinating botanical history, and we also enjoy behind the scenes visits and special content from guest lecturers and FFI staff.

Inside England’s Country Houses

This year, ACE is delighted to welcome Dr Adam White to our growing ranks of expert Tour Directors. In addition to being an experienced art historian and museum curator, Adam is also one of Britain’s leading authorities on English Elizabethan and Jacobean sculpture. This summer, he will lead two brand new tours that step behind the scenes of country houses in Yorkshire and Northamptonshire, opening up a clutch of private visits and speaking to the owners and curators of these historic collections. Adam writes:

“As Hon. Curator of Collections at Lotherton Hall, I’m responsible for the art collections of this historic house museum, as well as the ceramics collection at Temple Newsam House. My research interests include all aspects of the English country house, from the Reformation to the present day: architecture, interior design, furnishings, patronage and collecting of the fine and decorative arts, as well as the social, family and estate history of these wonderful places.

“Having worked at Lotherton Hall and Temple Newsam in Leeds for over twenty years, I am particularly excited to open my little black book for ACE travellers to really get under the skin of Yorkshire’s fantastic historic houses. We can look forward to special access to places that people simply don’t normally get to see, like Weston Hall – a true ‘sleeping beauty’ of a house which is very rarely open to visitors – and Clifton Castle, where the Marquess of Downshire will be giving us a personal guided tour of his family home.

“We’ll also enjoy truly expert guidance. Daru Rooke, who will be our guide at Cliffe Castle, is the Curator there and has masterminded the restoration of its historic interiors. At Burton Constable, we shall be shown around by Dr David Connell, the Director of the Burton Constable Foundation who has been at the forefront of the rescue of the house and the study of its interiors and collections.”
